One can’t help but notice the increase of cyber bullying due to the various, ever present social media platforms. But now, Instagram is integrating a new tool to help fight through the negative comments.
Earlier this year, Instagram released a statement promising their support in the fight against bullying, especially on their platform.
Instagram is, “an American photo and video-sharing social networking service owned by Facebook, Inc. It was created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, and launched in October 2010.” (via Wikipedia).
Millions of photo and video posts supply the app on a daily basis for followers to view, comment and like. But, with such easy access and a keyboard to hide behind, this platform can give bullies another means of attack.
“We are committed to leading the industry in the fight against online bullying” The company published through their Info Center page.
Further, in hopes to help bring down the rates of online bullying, Instagram is incorporating AI. This technology will work in their comment sections to help prevent mean comments from coming to fruition.
AI Integration on Instagram
To begin, in an attempt to promote more positive interactions on the app, Instagram is now incorporating AI into their platform.
AI or artificial intelligence is, “the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning (the acquisition of information and rules for using the information), reasoning (using rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions) and self-correction.” (via Tech Target)
In short, AI integrates human intelligence into technology. It is then able to perform and enforce processes and rules similarly to an actual human, but with the accuracy and availability of a computer.
What role with the AI play on IG?
Continuing on, Instagram will be using AI to help prevent mean comments from being posted. This is not to say that it will restrict every mean comment that comes through but, give the user a moment to think.
The AI in use will recognize key words that would one would consider mean or hurtful. It would then pop up while the comment is being typed, and ask the user if they still want to post this comment, because it may be hurtful.

Further, Instagram believes that this brief moment of reflection will play a key role in decreasing the amount of nasty comments on the platform.
“From early tests of this feature, we have found that it encourages some people to undo their comment and share something less hurtful once they have had a chance to reflect.”
Taken from their Info Page announcement, the goal of the AI is to help promote the app as a safe space for people to create and connect.
Will it work?
Now, only time (and a lot of research and analysis) will prove if this idea will help reduce bullying online. Will the people leaving the mean comments actually take a pause and think about what they are going to post? Or will they shrug it off and post in anyway?
All in all, one can only hope to create a positive and safe environment for everyone online. Some ideas need to start somewhere. And on Instagram, that somewhere is in the comments section.
